H2 is looking for a Senior Forward Deployed Backend Engineer to design and build secure, reliable, and scalable backend systems that translate complex construction domain and customer requirements into production software. Construction is one of the most complex operational domains in the world. Drawings, estimates, measurements, schedules, orders, and project documents generate large volumes of complex data and require integration across customer systems and workflows. H2 is building AI-powered systems that can understand this data, automate manual workflows, and turn construction domain knowledge into reliable software. You will own senior-level technical work across backend engineering, distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, enterprise integrations, and AI-enabled applications. You will work directly with customers and internal product and engineering teams to understand complex technical requirements, rapidly prototype solutions, and build reusable systems that can scale across H2’s enterprise customer base. This is a hands-on engineering role. We need someone who can reason deeply about complex systems, translate ambiguous customer requirements into technical solutions, prototype quickly, ship and own production systems, analyze performance and failure modes, and build scalable backend infrastructure for H2’s AI-powered products. Our backend stack includes Rust, Go, PostgreSQL, and containerized services running on AWS and GCP. WHAT YOU'LL DO • Own the design and delivery of secure, reliable, and scalable backend systems for H2’s construction products. • Design and build data structures, APIs, services, and distributed systems that map complex construction domain and business logic into production software. • Work directly with enterprise customers and internal stakeholders to understand technical requirements, existing infrastructure, data, and workflows and translate them into scalable technical solutions. • Rapidly prototype and validate solutions for complex customer requirements, then generalize successful approaches into reusable platform capabilities. • Design and implement robust APIs and integrations with customer field, CPQ, ERP, and other enterprise systems. • Build and operate reliable data pipelines that move construction drawings, AI/ML model outputs, estimates, and related data through H2’s platform. • Partner with AI/ML engineers to productionize model outputs, including serving, batch inference, evaluation, and integration into customer-facing workflows. • Design systems for scalability, reliability, security, performance, data integrity, and fault tolerance. • Own production backend services end-to-end, including testing, observability, reliability, monitoring, and incident response. • Partner with AI, product, frontend, and infrastructure engineers to bring AI capabilities into H2’s products and services while optimizing technical performance, cost, and user experience. • Diagnose and resolve complex production and customer deployment issues across application, data, infrastructure, and integration layers. • Make clear technical tradeoffs across system performance, scalability, reliability, customer requirements, infrastructure cost, and implementation speed. • Continually improve products and systems based on customer feedback, production data, monitoring, and performance metrics. • Review code and technical designs and help establish strong backend engineering practices across the team. • Stay current with advancements in backend engineering, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, AI-enabled applications, and related technologies, evaluating and adopting new tools and frameworks where appropriate.
