Itron is seeking a Principal UX Designer to help shape intuitive, human-centered experiences for a global line of business. This role offers the opportunity to influence the future of smart utility solutions within global energy systems, with a focus on Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), Distribution Grid, and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
As a highly collaborative and strategic team member, you will lead user-centered design practices within a scalable UX framework, delivering accessible and impactful experiences for complex enterprise platforms. You will play a key role in driving innovation while championing inclusive design and aligning UX outcomes with customer and business value.
Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the strategy and execution of user experience design for global enterprise solutions focused on distributed energy management, demonstrating accountability and ownership of outcomes.
Conduct, synthesize, and communicate user research insights to deepen understanding of diverse utility personas and inform customer-centric design decisions.
Design end-to-end user experiences—from low-fidelity concepts to high-fidelity prototypes—using tools such as Figma, ensuring consistency through scalable and reusable component libraries.
Collaborate closely with product management, engineering, and cross-functional teams to align UX solutions with business priorities and agile delivery practices.
Champion inclusive, accessible, and equitable design by embedding accessibility standards and best practices across all deliverables.
Advocate for continuous improvement by iterating on existing experiences to enhance usability, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Facilitate clear, collaborative, and efficient design handoffs with stakeholders and development partners.
Contribute to and evolve design systems and patterns using atomic design principles, while exploring innovative applications of AI-enabled design tools.
Apply systems thinking, creativity, and empathy to solve complex design challenges in a rapidly changing and agile environment.
Mentor and guide other designers and researchers, fostering a collaborative, authentic, and growth-oriented design culture.
Required Skills & Experience
10+ years of experience in UX design and research, ideally within enterprise SaaS or technology platforms, demonstrating innovative and customer-centric impact.
Proven ability to lead UX initiatives across large-scale, cross-functional programs with accountability for design outcomes.
Expertise in user research methodologies and the ability to translate insights into actionable, high-quality design solutions.
Advanced proficiency in Figma, including design systems, component libraries, and familiarity with AI-enabled design workflows and integrations.
Strong communication, storytelling, and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
Experience working in agile environments, adapting quickly to evolving priorities, constraints, and team velocity.
Demonstrated commitment to inclusive design, collaboration, and continuous improvement within a centralized or distributed design team.
Preferred Skills & Experience
Experience within the Utilities or Energy sector, including smart grid technologies, IoT, DERMS, DERs, or distribution grid systems.
Familiarity with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design practices that support diverse user needs.
Background in systems thinking, service design, or solution architecture for complex enterprise platforms.
Experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting the development of designers and researchers.
Travel: 0–20%

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. Liberty Lake, WA: The base salary is $96,000 – $188,000. This position is eligible for our annual bonus program.
